Funding
[Information Source--Planned Parenthood of America's 2007-2008 Annual Report]
- Planned Parenthood received $349.6 million tax dollars in 2007-2008. This is an increase of $12.9 million from 2006-2007.
- In 2007-2008, Planned Parenthood put $85 million of taxpayer money right into its savings account.
- Planned Parenthood ends every fiscal year with millions of dollars in profit.
- Abortion is one-third of Planned Parenthood's clinic income.
- Planned Parenthood generated more than $1.038 billion in Fiscal Year 2007-2008, which is an increase of nearly two percent from the previous reporting period. In the 2006-2007 fiscal year, Planned Parenthood's budget had risen more than 11 percent over the previous year's data.
Protecting Sexual Predators
There are two legal cases against Planned Parenthood of Southwestern Ohio in Cincinnati
- The first for failing to notify a 14-year-old girl's parents and obtain their consent for an abortion given to her after she was impregnated by her 21-year-old soccer coach. The parents filed suit alleging that Planned Parenthood failed to comply with the parental notification statute and the statute requiring health care providers to report known or suspected child abuse.
The parents sought copies of medical records and child abuse reports for other minors who had abortions at Planned Parenthood (with identifying information redacted) to show a pattern of failing to comply with the statutes and recover punitive damages.
NOTE: In December 2008 the Ohio General Assembly changed the child abuse reporting law to specifically provide for recovery of punitive damages and access to redacted abuse reports, and the statute states that it can be applied retroactively. In this case, on July 1, 2009 the Court ignored the General Assembly's decision for retroactive application.
- The second for failing to report suspicions of abuse to police when a young teen--a victim of incest at the hands of her father, impregnated by him, and taken to Planned Parenthood for an abortion--made statements indicating that she was sexually abused. The outcome of this case is still pending.
More instances across the nation
- In 2002, Life Dynamics did a three-year study of over 800 abortion centers in the United States. A woman posing as a minor impregnated by an adult called Planned Parenthood centers, gave them this information, and in all cases was assisted in some way to be able to obtain an abortion.
- In April 2007, law enforcement and Child Protection Services (CPS) in Kalamazoo, Michigan declined to investigate at least ten cases of possible child-rape unreported by a local Planned Parenthood. Michigan has similar reporting requirements as Ohio.
- In May 2007, a counselor at the UCLA student health center advised a pregnant student to have an abortion. The woman in the case, a pro-life student posing as a pregnant teenager, says Planned Parenthood advised her to disguise statutory rape. California also has similar reporting requirements as Ohio.
- In August 2007, a kidnapping and sexual abuse case occurred in Connecticut, where a 15-year-old teen was impregnated by a 41-year-old man then taken to Planned Parenthood for an abortion. Planned Parenthood did not report the possibility of sexual abuse, yet according to police reports, DNA taken from the dead unborn child matches the man's. Connecticut has similar reporting requirements as Ohio.
- Ongoing documentation by the Mona Lisa Project reports and records on video legal and ethical violations by Planned Parenthood facilities in Indiana, Arizona, Vermont, Connecticut, Ohio, Oklahoma, New Mexico, California, and Idaho. Video of these violations are available at http://www.liveaction.org (Note: YouTube has censored these truthful videos)
Targeting Minorities
- Planned Parenthood historically targeted minority populations for its services, including abortion, due originally to the eugenics philosophy of its founder Margaret Sanger. Recently, Planned Parenthood has been purchasing property in different areas of the country in areas with higher African American populations (Aurora, IN; Houston, TX; Portland, OR).
- In April of 2007, phone recordings were released from a journalistic probe conducted by the pro-life student magazine, The Advocate, which had an actor pose as a racist donor and call Planned Parenthood of Central Ohio plus affiliates in Idaho, New Mexico, Oklahoma and other states in July 2007. The actor said he wanted his donation used to abort African American babies. Each branch agreed to process the earmarked donation. Learn more about this at http://www.liveaction.org/index.php/projects/racism.
- In May 2007, former Ohio Secretary of State Ken Blackwell (R) sent a letter to House Minority Leader John Boehner (R-Ohio) to request that Congressman Boehner launch a congressional investigation into Planned Parenthood's response to this racist request. Mr. Blackwell drew attention to Planned Parenthood's tax funding (the PPFA receives more than $300 million annually) and his hope that Congressman Boehner will agree that Planned Parenthood needs at minimum congressional investigation.
- Also in May 2007, Protect Cincinnati learned that Planned Parenthood of Southwestern Ohio in Cincinnati has purchased property near Western Hills High School for an additional office. Planned Parenthood bought the property under the name Mount Auburn Parking LLC. Students are bussed to Western Hills High School from other areas of the city, and the student population is predominately African American. Within a few miles are also several large Catholic High Schools.

Targeting Teens
- Planned Parenthood's teenwire web site targets teens with sexually explicit photos, videos, and discussion. See http://www.teenwire.com.
- After a public outcry in summer of 2008, a Planned Parenthood affiliate removed graphic content encouraging teen sexual promiscuity from its TakeCareDownThere web site. The content was re-posted a few months later. See http://www.takecaredownthere.org.
Contraceptive Agenda
Faulty Condoms
- In a 2005 Consumer Reports study, condoms supplied by Planned Parenthood were more likely to fail than any other condom tested.
Emergency Contraception
- Planned Parenthood is a prime proponent and provider of the "Morning After Pill" (Plan B) or Emergency Contraception.
- In August 2006, the FDA approved over-the-counter sales of Plan B birth control pills to women 18 years old and older without a prescription. In April 2009, the FDA complied with a federal judge's order to permit 16-year-olds to obtain Plan B without a prescription.
The FDA will later evaluate whether all age restrictions will be lifted.
- The Morning After Pill is a high dose of the hormones estrogen and progestin that can be taken within the first 72 hours after sexual activity, then again 12 hours later, in an attempt to prevent pregnancy.
The drug can prevent a pregnancy in one of four ways:
- Ovulation may be prevented and an egg not released
- A woman's menstrual cycle may be altered and ovulation delayed
- Sperm migration to or penetration of an egg may be altered
- The uterine wall may be altered so that a fertilized egg cannot implant, dies, and is expelled - this is abortifacient
- Because of this drug's abortifacient properties, some pharmacists across the country have lost their jobs because they refuse to fill prescriptions for abortifacient drugs.
- No studies have been conducted as to the effect of such high doses of hormones on women, especially young women and teens.
Contraception and Abortion
- Greater access to contraceptives does not decrease the abortion rate. According to Planned Parenthood's own research agency, "Fifty four percent of women who have abortions had used a contraceptive method (usually the condom or the pill) during the month they became pregnant." The same study also shows that only "eight percent of women who have abortions have never used a method of birth control"--meaning that 92% of women who have abortions have had access to, and used, birth control. (Alan Guttmacher Institute, Facts on Induced Abortion in the United States, July 2008)
Harming Women
- On February 12, 2008, a woman filed a lawsuit against Planned Parenthood Metropolitan located in Washington, D.C. for damages suffered during an abortion procedure at a Planned Parenthood center. Emma Jean Butler, mother of Shantese Butler, is suing Planned Parenthood for $50 million in damages. Butler took her daughter to the D.C. Planned Parenthood on September 7, 2006 to abort a child conceived in rape. During the abortion, Shantese sustained severe abdominal bleeding, severe vaginal injury, severe injury to the cervix, significant uterine perforation, and a small bowel tear. In addition, parts of the child were found inside Shantese's abdomen on September 8, 2006. Because of these injuries, Shantese will be infertile for the rest of her life.
- In February 2002, Diane Lopez, 25, bled to death after her 19 week old baby was aborted at a California Planned Parenthood facility. A state report on the death said her cervix was punctured during the abortion causing uncontrollable bleeding.
- In 2001, a San Francisco court decision awarded over $650,000 in damages to a Yugoslav immigrant whose pre-born child suffered the loss of two limbs during a botched abortion at Planned Parenthood.
- Also in 2001, Planned Parenthood agreed to pay a New York woman $1 million because it had repeatedly insisted she did not have breast cancer when she did.
- In 2000, a Missouri woman went into a coma after a doctor at a Planned Parenthood clinic apparently placed an oxygen tube in her stomach instead of her lungs.
